Hello there! I'm Eliot.
I'm a trans guy, he/him, a Bat–Pony VTuber!
I make YouTube videos – tutorials for a lot of things! VRoid models, VRChat avatars and VTubing in general! Sometimes I also play games.

℧〕VRoid Studio – VRoid Studio is an app that simplifies the process of making humanoid 3D Models. I totally recommend it for anyone who wants to get into making models for VTubing or VRChat and has no Blender experience!
℧〕Blender 4.2 LTS – The latest Long Time Support version of Blender.
℧〕VRChat Creator Companion – VCC is necessary for uploading VRChat avatars.
℧〕Unity 2022.3.22f1 – The version of Unity that VCC requires you to use.

℧〕VRM Add-on for Blender – Allows you to import VRM models into Blender.
℧〕Unofficial Cats Plugin – Blender add-on that has many functions that allow you for easier avatar creation. Make sure to check out the Cats website and wiki for more information about the plugin!
℧〕Gesture Manager – Available to add to your project in VCC. Helpful for checking if your toggles work before uploading the avatar into VRChat.
℧〕Avatars 3.0 Manager – Available to add to your project in VCC. Allows you to merge different FX layers/parameters together. Also has more features that are helpful while making toggles for VRChat.
℧〕UniVRM – Plugin that lets you upload VRM models to Unity in order to modify them for VTubing, not VRChat.
℧〕NEB Lite – This one is for VRM models – models made for VTubing, not VRChat. It's a Unity plugin that speeds up the creation of ARKit Blendshapes that let you have way better face tracking! It's free and works really well!

℧〕Gacha Club – I use it mostly to come up with ideas for models.
℧〕ibisPaint X – I use the free app on my Android phone to draw textures for my models/avatars.
℧〕MToon – The shader I use for my avatars and models.
℧〕Booth – A website where you can get assets for VRChat and VRoid.
℧〕GoGo Loco – A posing system for VRChat avatars.
℧〕Warudo – A 3D Model tracking app. Allows to have ARKit tracking without an iPhone, just a webcam! It also has a lot of different settings that allow you to have better control of your model.

℧〕What’s a VTuber?
A VTuber is a person who creates content online with a virtual avatar! It’s that simple!
℧〕Can you still show your face?
Of course! The rules of VTubing are very vague, it’s more of a medium of self expression. You can show your face and be a VTuber at the same time! Here are some examples of people who do that: Kson, Quinn Benet, Kuro Kurenai (also known as K9Kuro), Layna Lazar and a bunch of others!
℧〕Can you be a VTuber for free?
Yes, of course! I’d highly recommend it for all beginners. Custom VTuber models are expensive and it’s completely fine to start for free! You can either get a free model online or make one yourself.
℧〕Types of models.
There are 3 main types of models: PNG/GIF, 2D and 3D. The kind you get depends on what you want! The most popular one is a 2D Model, but there’s no shame in using a different kind! Different models can do different things and you should pick one that suits your tastes.
If you’re a beginner I highly recommend starting for free or cheap!
℧〕Where to get free/cheap models?
– PNG – Picrew;
– 2D/3D Model – Booth.
Make sure to check the Terms of Service of each model and follow it! Even if the ToS says crediting isn’t required it always looks better if you do credit them.
℧〕How to make your own model?
If you have artistic skills you can make a model yourself! Draw a PNG or a 2D Model. If you’re drawing a 2D Model you will need to separate the layers and rig it (most people use Live2D Cubism for that). Here’s a playlist I found that has tutorials about rigging, you can search for other tutorials online too! If you can draw, but would rather not learn how to rig, you can go on VGen and look for a rigger to hire (for money, of course). For a 3D Model you can use VRoid Studio and/or Blender. VRoid can also be used by people with less artistic skills too – it has a lot of pre–made assets to pick from. Additionally you can add ARKit Blendshapes (they provide better face tracking) to your VRoid model in Unity with NEB Lite – free, or Hana Tool – paid.
℧〕What are customisable models?
Customisable models are typically a bit cheaper than full custom models. If you have money to spend you can get one of the customisable models like the Suiika’s Model, that recently became very popular, or a different customisable model. Here’s a Twitter Thread with lots of options to choose from! I also found this customisable male model – WaniShua.
℧〕Where to commission a custom VTuber model?
If you’d prefer to commission an artist for a PNG or 2D/3D Model that’s unique to you (and you have a lot of money to spend – about a few hundred American dollars), I recommend looking at VGen. If you’re planning to get a custom model, you’ll need to hire an artist and a rigger (if your artist doesn’t do rigging). Remember that art is expensive, so if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. VGen is mostly safe, but always remember to double check every person you want to commission, especially when money is involved!
℧〕Cheaper custom models?
A popular option is commissioning a half body model. They can come in two ways: full body art + half body rigging or half body art + half body rigging. It’s also worth checking out emergency commissions.
℧〕Free reference for a custom VTuber model.
A reference is very important when commissioning a custom model. It insures you can your artist are on the same page. Here are some ways in which you can create a free reference:
– make a PNG in Picrew;
– make a sim in The Sims 4 (it’s free) can be with the help of custom content, you can get CC on sites like The Sims Resource or Mod The Sims;
– make a character in one of the Gacha games from Lunime;
– make a 3D Model in VRoid Studio;
– participate in a raffle or giveaway. Respect artists, don't use generative AI. VTubing is very tightly connected with artists who make the models, assets and everything else. Respect them and don't use AI generated images.
℧〕What app to track a model with?
Each model uses different apps. Some options include:
– PNGTuber Plus or Veadotube Mini for a PNG;
– VTube Studio for a 2D;
– VSeeFace, Warudo or VNyan for a 3D.
Obviously those aren’t the only choices and I encourage you to do your own research. Here are some tutorials you may find helpful:
℧〕What about a camera?
The best for VTubing is an iPhone XR or newer. However don’t worry if you don’t have one! For a PNG a camera isn’t needed, everything is tracked based on your voice. You do need a camera for a 2D Model (to my knowledge, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) – a webcam will do fine if you don’t have an iPhone. I wouldn’t recommend trying to use an android phone – they weren’t made for this kind of thing and will lag, crash and generally be very bad. If you’re using a 3D Model some apps support tracking only based on audio, for example 3tene, VDRAW or VMirrorMagic.
℧〕What about streaming?
First thing I feel the need to say is that as an independent VTuber you don’t need to stream! You can make YouTube videos or TikTok videos if that’s something you feel more comfortable with. However if you’d like to stream you will need to pick what site to stream on. Some options include YouTube, Twitch and Kick. You can also multi–stream, aka stream on multiple platforms at the same time. Streaming or not, you will need to use a different software to setup your scene, model and audio. The popular apps include OBS and Streamlabs. I highly recommend checking out the Stream Scheme channel for tutorials on how to set up scenes and other content creation advice. Their discord also offers free stingers, overlays, backgrounds and other assets that you may use. They helped me a lot when I was first starting out (I still use the free backgrounds I got from one of their videos!).
℧〕Start with what you have!
You don't need to instantly upgrade to the newest and most powerful PC.
℧〕Microphones!
If you were to buy something I highly recommend getting a good microphone. In my opinion it’s a must for any content creator. Microphones that other VTubers recommend are: Blue Yeti, Fifine K669B and Wave:3.
℧〕Free assets!
– VTuber Assets;
– More VTuber Assets;
– Discord Server Full of Various Assets;
– Food & Drinks;
– Free Background Music;
– Matte Stingers;
– Twitch Overlays.
℧〕All about debuts!
If you’ve ever stumbled upon a corporate VTuber, you’ve probably seen a debut or two. A debut by definition is the first livestream a VTuber does with their model. They’re used to introduce them to the viewers and build anticipation and excitement for the VTuber’s content. Debuts are mostly organised by corporations in order to promote their new employees – very often they come with lore videos and original songs! Some intendant VTubers also do debuts, but not all of them! Most VTubers include PowerPoint presentations showcasing information about them, their interests and fun facts. VTubers can also debut multiple times! Like when debuting a new model, an update to their current model or some other important event! You absolutely don’t need to debut! Debuts can be a scary thing, especially if it’s your first shot at content creation and you don’t have an existing fanbase. People aren’t likely to follow an indie that makes no content.
℧〕Lore.
Lore for VTubers is a story that explains the universe they live in and what role they play in it, some VTubers like to play a character – but not all! You can come up with lore for yourself if you’d like. It’s not a necessity.
℧〕Songs and singing.
You may have noticed that a lot of VTubers have original songs or covers. It mostly comes from idle culture that VTubing takes a lot of inspiration from. If you would like so sing, here’s a tutorial that explains some of the process! It is not a requirement to sing.
℧〕Be unique!
Ask yourself, what is something you are especially good at? What is something that can make people watch you instead of other people? It's important to create a good & original posture for your VTuber, one solid personality that's recognisable and unique and puts you separately from the rest. Your personality is the most important thing for a content creator. Your model is very important, as that's the eye–grabber and it should fit your personality well, but most of all should be unique and should also fit your evenly unique personality.
If there's anything I forgot or I should add feel free to let me know on my Discord Server!
